Q. Can people from the USA play real money poker at Pokerstars in 2013?
A. No, US players are not able to play at Poker Stars in 2013.
Q. Can Americans play for fun at Pokerstars or Full Tilt Poker in 2013?
Q. When and why did Poker Stars stop accepting Americans?
A. On April 15th, 2011, the US government took control of the www.Pokerstars.com domain name, along with the domain names of several other US poker sites. Pokerstars - owned by Entertainment Enterprises Limited - cut a deal with the U.S. Department of Justice in order to get their domain name back. They were back online very quickly but from that day forward they blocked Americans from their real money poker tables. They also refunded all balances to American players.
Q. Will Poker Stars accept USA players in the near future?
A. Yes, most likely. Several U.S. states have or will be passing laws that legalize and regular online poker. Pokerstars cooperated with the government so that they would be one of the first online poker companies to receive a license to offer Internet poker in America. The US government dropped all charges (improper banking practices...ect) against Pokerstars so they are in good standing. As more and more states start allowing online poker it is likely that it will be legalized on the federal level. Even if there are no changes in federal law it is very unlikely that the government will target licensed online poker rooms any longer. Online poker is not illegal in the USA, the restrictions are related to banking practices. We can play poker for money online legally but US banks are not allowed to process deposits and withdrawals. Many still do anyway but it is generally more difficult for Americans to deposit at a poker room and payouts can take a week or two. So the short answer is yes, Poker Stars will most likely accept US players by the end of 2013.
Q. Can U.S.A. citizens play in freeroll tournaments and win money at Pokerstars?
A. No, US citizens can only play at the play chip poker tables at Pokerstars.
Q. Are there US friendly poker sites that are similar to Pokerstars?
A. Yes. There are three fast paying US poker rooms that are comparable to Pokerstars in 2013. They are not a large but tens of thousands of Americans are playing at the cash tables at any given time. These three US poker rooms are Bovada Poker, BetOnline Poker and Americas Cardroom. Click the links to visit our review pages for each room. They are the three largest online poker sites for Americans in 2013. They each also offer sports betting, horse betting and casino gambling to Americans. All other poker rooms are taking 2-3 months to pay Americans but these rooms only take 12-36 hours for Moneygram and Western Union payouts (cash in hand!), 5-14 days for Fedex/UPS check cashouts, 7 day bank wires and several other quick options. The easy deposits and quick withdrawals have attracted most of the US poker market to these rooms. They may not be as big as Pokerstars but they are just as good.
Q. Can Americans play at Pokerstars if they are outside of the USA? For instance, if I am in Canada or Europe currently can I play at Pokerstars for real money even though I am an American? Or, if I use a proxy server or something can I play at Pokerstars?
A. No, you must legally reside outside of the United States to hold a real money account at Pokerstars in 2013. I strongly advise against opening offshore bank accounts and using software to change your IP address in an attempt to play at Pokerstars. They will catch you. It is much safer and simpler to just play at one of the USA poker rooms listed above.
If you are no from the USA and want to play at Pokerstars.com you cam claim $20 in free money - cash credit, not a bonus. Traffic at Pokerstars at any given time ranges from 150,000 to 250,000. Pokerstars.com not accepting players from the USA right now but they are still the best online poker site in 2013. Here are some links to other Poker Stars guides on Bet AMU.
